Dip Falls - Tasmania
Dip Falls is a stunning waterfall set amidst the lush forest of the Dip River Forest Reserve, near Mawbanna in Northwest Tasmania. Renowned for its striking two-tiered structure and remarkable rock formations, it’s a must-see natural wonder that captures the dramatic beauty of Tasmania’s wilderness.
At the top tier, the Dip River plunges roughly 40 metres over a broad expanse of hexagonal basalt lava, creating a powerful, cascading curtain of water. The lower section offers a different kind of spectacle: here the river drops about 10 metres over a semi-circular rim, where larger, step-like basalt columns add a sculptural quality to the falls. Surrounded by rich greenery and shaded forest, Dip Falls is as much a feast for the eyes as it is a serene spot to enjoy the sounds and sights of rushing water.
There are several areas to view the beauty of Dip Falls. A newly constructed staircase leads down through the rainforest to a lookout at the base of Dip Falls, which spans the Dip River.
From the main carpark, if you continue along the road and across the bridge, another short track brings you to a lookout with a spectacular view of the upper falls. This lookout is much easier to access and is signposted as wheelchair accessible. Dip Falls is awe-inspiring after rain; these photos and videos were taken in the area on a few rainy days.
Directions to Dip Falls
We visited Dip Falls from Stanley, which was approx. 41 kilometres away.
From the Stanley Visitor Centre, head west on Main Road (B21) towards Dovecote Road and continue along the B21 for 6.6 kilometres.
Turn left onto the Bass Highway and continue along the Bass Highway for 7.8 kilometres. Turn right onto Mawbanna Road and continue for 27 kilometres.
The last several kilometres of this road are unsealed but are in reasonably good condition and suitable for a 2WD Vehicle. You will then see the Dip Falls Carpark on the right.
