Hidden deep within the lush rainforest of Wooroonooran National Park, in Far North Queensland, Nandroya Falls is one of those waterfalls you truly earn. Located southwest of Cairns along the Palmerston Highway, this spectacular cascade drops around 50 metres over a basalt cliff into a deep, emerald plunge pool below. While reaching the falls requires a scenic walk through towering trees and tropical greenery, the journey is just as memorable as the destination.

A Waterfall Shaped by Basalt and Flowing Creeks

Nandroya Falls is formed where Douglas Creek rushes through a narrow basalt gap before plunging dramatically into the pool beneath. The surrounding rainforest is thick and vibrant, alive with the sounds of flowing water and birdsong. On arrival, you can sit quietly and admire the falls or cool off with a refreshing swim in the clear water at the base — a perfect reward after the walk in.

A Scenic Walk Through the Rainforest

The walk to Nandroya Falls begins from the western side of the Henrietta Creek Campground, where you cross a bridge to access the track. The direct return walk, including a visit to nearby Silver Falls, is approximately 2.2 kilometres, while an alternative trail meanders gently along the creek and offers a more immersive rainforest experience.

Along the way, you’ll pass through lush vegetation, cross several creeks and enjoy the peaceful rhythm of the rainforest. Be aware that the track can be narrow, muddy and slippery, especially after rain, but it’s well worth the effort.

Don’t Miss Silver Falls

One of the highlights of this walk is Silver Falls, a lovely, smaller cascade reached along the same track. Visiting both waterfalls in one walk makes this an especially rewarding outing and a favourite among hikers exploring the Wet Tropics.

Facilities at Henrietta Creek

The Henrietta Creek Campground is a great base for your visit, with picnic tables, BBQs and toilets available for day-use visitors and campers. It’s an ideal spot to relax after your hike or enjoy a meal surrounded by rainforest.

Getting to Nandroya Falls

Nandroya Falls is located near the Henrietta Creek Campground in Wooroonooran National Park, just off the Palmerston Highway. The road is fully sealed, and the falls are approximately 23 kilometres from Millaa Millaa.

There is plenty of parking available for day visitors, campers, buses and motorhomes, making this an easy and popular stop for those exploring the Atherton Tablelands and Wet Tropics region.

Visiting Tips

Wear sturdy hiking shoes – creek crossings and muddy sections are common.
Best after light rain for good flow, but avoid visiting after heavy rain.
Bring swimmers and a towel if you plan to dip in the plunge pool.
