Tocumwal Town Beach Campground Review | Murray River Camping Near Town

Tocumwal Town Beach Campground is a fantastic riverside camping spot on the banks of the Murray River in southern New South Wales. Located just 800 metres from the centre of Tocumwal, it’s an easy walk to town while still feeling relaxed and nature-filled.

It’s a popular campground for swimming, fishing, kayaking, and simply unwinding by the river. Tocumwal is conveniently located approximately 275 kilometres north of Melbourne and 700 kilometres south-west of Sydney, making it a great stop on a Murray River road trip or an easy weekend getaway from Victoria.

Access & Campsites

Access to Tocumwal Town Beach Campground is via a narrow sealed road, and the camping areas consist of flat gravel sites with grassy and sandy areas along the riverbank.

There are 65 unpowered camping sites available. Not all sites are riverfront, with additional camping areas located closer to the amenities block and along the access road.

Sites are not numbered, and you simply choose a site on arrival. Even if you pre-book, a riverfront site is not guaranteed. This campground is extremely popular during school holidays and the warmer months, so arriving early is highly recommended.

The riverfront sites have access to town water and a sullage point, and vehicles must reverse into these sites. We selected a lovely flat, sunny site about halfway along the river. Some sites closer to the entrance offer more shade during the day. We stayed in early September, and while it was busy, it wasn’t completely full.

Camping Fees

Camping fees are $7.50 per adult per night, with children staying free. You can book and pay online by searching Tocumwal Town Beach, where you’ll be prompted to enter your dates, number of people, vehicle registration, and payment details. Alternatively, you can pay on arrival by placing cash in an envelope and depositing it in the payment slot near the amenities block.

Amenities

Opposite the riverfront camping area is a rustic amenities block with toilets and cold showers. Be sure to bring your own toilet paper, as none is supplied. There is also a small book exchange located at the entrance to the amenities, which is great if you forgot a book.

Important Information

  • Tocumwal Town Beach is dog-friendly, just keep your dogs on a lead and clean up after them.

  • Fires are allowed as long as there is no Fire Ban, and there are some fire pits along the river

  • The camping spots are easily accessible for motorhomes.

  • We had good Telstra mobile coverage when we stayed.

  •  Rustic Toilets are available.

  • The Dump Point is near the amenity block

  • Town water is available at the riverfront sites, and there are several other taps around.

  • Rubbish bins and recycling bins

  • Flat Gravel sites

  • Cold Showers available

From the campground, it’s an easy 900-metre walk into the friendly town of Tocumwal. The town has everything you need, including an IGA supermarket, petrol station, chemist, post office, bakery, cafés, and hotels.
